Time Out reveals world’s best cities for 2024

At number two on Time Out’s list is Cape Town, South Africa, a city ranked, according to Time Out, by “every single survey respondent” as “beautiful,” thanks no doubt to its stunning combination of sea, cityscape and spectacular mountainous surroundings.

Time Out specifically shouted out Cape Town’s cultural offerings – from its late night museum evenings over the summer months to its theater and comedy offerings at Theatre on the Bay, as well as the newly opened Time Out Market Cape Town.

Katy Scott, who grew up in Cape Town and now lives in France, tells CNN Travel she sees it as “perhaps the most unpretentious coastal city in the world,” praising the opportunities to get out into nature as well as the “top-rated restaurants, pristine wine farms and a swanky nightlife scene.”

But Scott also points out “that these things aren’t accessible to the majority of citizens.”

“South Africa may be celebrating 30 years of democracy, but the inequality in cities like Cape Town is starker than ever,” says Scott.

With that in mind, Scott advises that “to truly understand the city and its people” visitors should “get out of the tourist bubble and take that trip to Robben Island or the District Six museum” – both spots recommended by Time Out that engage with South Africa’s apartheid history.

“Both places offer unique and powerful insights into South Africa’s history,” Scott says.

Cape Town has landed 3 new airlines, 4 new destinations and 7 route expansions in just 14 months

Over the past fourteen months, CTAA landed 3 new airlines, 4 new destinations and 7 route expansions to the Mother City. This added 150 000 one-way seats to the network and contributed to a 9% growth in international passenger traffic and includes:

· Return of United Airlines to CT with direct route to Newark/New York commenced on 15 Dec

· Austrian Airlines from Vienna commenced on October 27

· Cathay Pacific from Hong Kong commenced on 13 November

· FlyWestair from Windhoek (Eros) via Oranjemund commenced on 7 October

Added to these, two African airlines resumed their service to Cape Town in 2019, including Air Botswana with flights to Gaborone, as well as SA Express adding flights to Walvis Bay from Cape Town. Five airlines expanded their frequencies to the Mother City, there were Qatar Airways, Austrian Airlines, Kenya Airways, Airlink, and RwandAir.

After also picking up the award for Destination Marketing at the, Routes Africa 2019 Awards which took place on Sunday, 9 December, Tim Harris, CEO of Wesgro says, “We’re delighted by the recognition and acknowledgement from our colleagues in the aviation community. Cape Town Helicopters and BokBus have been recognised as two of the best experiences in the world, according to GetYourGuide. The global winners of the 2019 GetYourGuide Awards – an annual recognition of excellence in travel experiences – were unveiled on December 17.

GetYourGuide is a booking platform for travel experiences. Their winners are judged by their excellence in customer service, uniqueness in product offering and contribution to the local community. The two Cape Town based winners highlight the range of amazing experiences offered in the Mother City.

Cape Town Helicopters won the Best Adrenaline Rush award, specifically for its “2 Oceans Scenic Helicopter Flight”. The activity, a scenic helicopter flight over the city, gives you the rush of being in the clouds and the peace of seeing some of the most breathtaking views you’ve ever witnessed.

BokBus won the Best Tour Guide award. Benjamin Glaman, 58, from Nelspruit is the tour guide that has been bestowed this honour. His top rated tour is two days long and stops in Hermanus first, before heading to the Garden Route Game Lodge. It is here that Benjamin invites guests to get up close and personal with the Big 5. Nyanga and Monwabisi Beach

‘The Flats’, as known by locals, consist of township areas such as Bishop Lavis, Hanover Park, Langa, Khayelitsha, Manenberg and Nyanga which the Duke and Duchess visited on their first day in Cape Town.

District Six Museum

District Six, once a vibrant mixed community of freed slaves, merchants, artisans, labourers and immigrants, is rich in history. A place to visit is the District Six Museum, which Meghan and Harry visited. The museum offers displays and relics of what life was like.

Bo-Kaap

In the 18th century, the Dutch brought slaves to the Cape from India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and the Indonesian Archipelago. These individuals and their descendants largely built the city and, once freed, many settled in the Bo-Kaap.

It may be one of the most photographed areas of the Mother City, but the brightly painted houses and quaint cobbled streets aren’t the only reasons to visit the Bo-Kaap. This part of Cape Town is packed full of history and culture which explains why Harry and Meghan spent their Heritage Day here. Construction on the Auwal Mosque, which was a key stop for Harry and Meghan in the Bo-Kaap, began in 1794, making it the oldest mosque in South Africa.

The Cape Innovation & Technology Initiative (CiTi) was honoured to host HRH the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, at its Woodstock Bandwidth Barn this week.

Together with the UK-SA Tech Hub, the Bandwidth Barn hosted a roundtable with the Duchess and a group of female entrepreneurs who are all building and driving entrepreneurial ecosystems in South Africa. ‘Ladies who Launch’ aims to ignite opportunity through network building between aspiring and, inspiring women entrepreneurs as successful female role models.
